About Pimsler Residency Dance Performance
"Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (SPDT) is a nationally-recognized performance company that has been co-directed by Suzanne Costello and Stuart Pimsler since its inception in 1979... For over 30 years SPDT has garnered critical acclaim for its compelling and poignant performance work, and commitment to education and community inclusive programs. The company's programs give voice to those populations who typically do not have an opportunity to see their lives as the focal point for arts exploration." - stuartpimsler.com
Performance include the following works:
TALES FROM THE BOOK OF LONGING (2010) - Inspired by the poetry of Leonard Cohen and the music of Antony and the Johnsons, Tales from the Book of Longing unfolds in an episodic landscape of sinuous moments out of reach and quiet scenes of missed chances. This work of signature SPDT dance/theater weaves its way through a world of frayed relationshops teetering on the edge of change.
WAYS TO BE HOLD (2008) - A 2008 Minnesota SAGE Award winning piece for "Outstanding Performance",Ways to Be Hold celebrates ways of both holding and being held filtered through a series of personal and global inquiries. Pimsler's seven performers are caught between moments of tenderness and assault as they decide how to respond in dangerous times - a work performed with courage, grace and generosity of spirit. Spoken word artist Tiyo Siyolo provides the compelling narration. This work was the only U.S. work to be presented at the 2012 Tanzmesse nrw, an international festival of dance hosted by the city of Dusseldorf, Germany.
SINGING, WALKING, AND OTHER HABITS focuses on the nature of distraction and happenstance - exploring everyday lives not in a grand narrative, but as a collection of smaller moments and realizations. This work showcases the performance range of the SPDT artists as the work moves through moments of emotionally-charged movement, acting and singing.
AT IT AGAIN - This new solo created and performed by Stuart Pimsler had its world premiere during the company's recent East Coast tour. This highly-theatrical work is conceived as a fan letter to the legendary American author, Philip Roth. Pimsler's conversation with Roth uncovers and comments on their mutual joys, fears and passions relating to their common backgrounds and histories. This work continues and embellishes upon Mr. Pimsler's long standing reputation as the "Woody Allen of modern dance.
